The Valley COM emphasizes wellness – for our students, faculty, and staff. The Global Wellness Institute defines wellness as the active pursuit of activities, choices, and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health.
The Valley COM has built a culture around the balance of wellness using the 8 Dimensions of Wellness as adapted from SAMHSA. Each dimension of wellness can affect the overall quality of life. The Eight Dimensions of Wellness take into account not only an individual’s physical health but all the factors that contribute to a person’s overall wellness.
All The Valley COM students are required to have and maintain personal health insurance at the time of matriculation and throughout the duration of the academic program. Insurance will be verified each semester as a component of the registration process. The Valley COM also reserves the right to periodically monitor student maintenance of health insurance.
Counseling Services, through the Office of Student Services, provides immediate support for students on campus through a variety of support programs to promote wellness and mitigate the stresses associated with medical school. Counseling services can also assist students who are dealing with any kind of substance abuse or addiction issue.
The Valley COM has a multi-dimensional counseling support network for all students. The college employs a licensed counselor on campus. Students may make appointments in confidence by contacting the counselor directly via phone or scheduling through the online app. The Valley COM also provides students with 24/7 access to a free and confidential counseling service available to students. This service is also an excellent option for students who are on clinical rotations away from campus and in other states.
All counseling referrals and sessions are confidential and are not recorded in the student’s educational records.
If you feel unsafe to yourself or others, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
On Campus Counseling Service
A student may make an appointment to see the on campus counselor during normal business hours. Appointments are at no cost to the student and can be scheduled in person, via phone, or via videoconferencing.

The Valley COM focuses on wellness for students, faculty, and staff. Information on available wellness programs and events can be found on our website or through digital messaging within the COM. The Valley COM offers a gym inside our facility and a walking/ running track around our property to help students, faculty, and staff maintain physical wellness.
The Valley COM provides student health services through community-based resources. Students may seek health care through off-campus clinical providers in the area. If one is looking for a provider, please see the Physical Health Services page on the website for recommended providers. All services are provided in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Affordability Act (HIPAA) and are strictly confidential.
Students are encouraged to establish a health care home with a primary care provider. Becoming an established patient enhances how quickly you can be seen for a problem. If a student requires urgent care or needs to be seen during off-hours, they should contact their own provider or a local urgent care center. Local urgent care centers are listed on our website.
If a student is unable to contact their primary care provider, care should be obtained in the nearest Urgent Care or Emergency Department. Emergency services are always available for life threatening conditions: please call 911 for any condition that appears life threatening.
